There are actually many practices to help train our minds to become present. Meditation is, perhaps, the most popular. But our practice does not have to be anything so formal. In fact, in can be one of our own design. Eckhart Tolle, author of The Power of Now, describes a simple method he employs. He puts his attention on a part of his body and tries to feel the energy in it. I myself have had good luck with this technique. I had to do it a few times before I felt its full effect, but in very short order, I noticed a strong tingling where I focused my attention. I also noticed a calmer mind afterwards. This was my mind settling into presence.
